The Audacity to Heal: Black Women, Mental Health & May’s Sacred Invitation

May is here. And with it comes a sacred invitation to pause, reflect, and remember that your mental wellness is your birthright.

For us, Mental Health Awareness Month is a community-wide, shared moment to name what often goes unspoken: The weight Black women carry. The resilience we wear like armor. The healing we deserve but are rarely given space to access.

This month, we are centering rest, truth, and radical care.

Through workshops, healing circles, storytelling, and content that nourishes the spirit, SousSHE is creating space for:

  • Conversations around generational trauma & joy
  • Boundaries and what we refuse to carry
  • The beauty of asking for help…yes
  • The relationship between wellness and worth
  • Celebrating the ways Black women heal, cope, and reclaim

This Week’s Prompt:

What does it look like for YOU to be well? Not just functional, not just present—but whole?

Write it down. Say it aloud. Let that truth shape the rest of your month.

Why Prioritizing Space Matters

Black women are often the backbones of their families, communities, and movements—but rarely invited to prioritize themselves.

In a recent study by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), only 25% of Black women who experience mental health conditions receive adequate treatment.

Systemic inequities, cultural stigma, and a lack of culturally competent care continue to keep wellness out of reach for too many.

That’s why SousSHE invests in safe, culturally rooted spaces. From intimate Healing Circles to our “Sis, Let’s Talk” gatherings and personal development cohorts, every space we hold centers Black women as worthy of care, rest, and restoration.
