Black Women Envision Cultivating Magic and Movements in Wellness

empowerHER, Let's Reflect

The empowerHER: Navigating Wellness for Black Women event wasn’t just another gathering on the calendar—it was a vibrant declaration of the power of purposeful community engagement. Hosted at the serene Wellness, Empowerment & Resiliency Campus facilitated by BOSS, we embarked on a journey to celebrate and connect and empower genuinely.

The purpose was clear from the outset: to establish a haven where Black women could unite, thrive, and empower themselves and each other. This gathering was meticulously painted with strokes of inclusivity and highlighted with personal stories of resilience and triumph.

Building Bridges through Workshops and Dialogues

At the core of empowerHER was an array of workshops and panels, each meticulously designed to bridge the gap between everyday challenges and optimal health. We brought together experts from various fields—mental health, financial wellness, personal development, and more—who shared invaluable insights that fostered an environment ripe for personal growth and collective enlightenment.

Highlights of the day included our focused 30-minute workshops, which allowed deep dives into specific wellness topics. These weren’t just lectures but interactive, dynamic sessions where real-time engagement and problem-solving took center stage. Participants walked away with more than just knowledge—they gained practical tools tailored to improve their personal and financial health.

The discussions were impactful, addressing vital issues like health disparities and mental wellness, particularly poignant within our community. Each session was a building block toward greater understanding and proactive change, aiming to dismantle the systemic barriers that impede the well-being of Black women.

Celebrating Connections and Self-Reflection

The essence of the day was celebration—a genuine, heartfelt celebration of sisterhood and self-discovery. A standout feature was our Love Letter Station, where attendees paused to pen reflective letters to themselves and other Black women. This powerful act of self-love underscored the importance of recognizing and affirming one’s strength and value on the journey to wellness.

This station was a supportive space where every woman could feel seen and heard. The shared experience of writing and reflecting created a profound sense of solidarity, reinforcing that although our journeys are personal, they are also interconnected.

No celebration is complete without the perfect blend of music and art, which was integral to the empowerHER event.  The “Love Letter to Black Women” photography exhibit, curated by the gifted La’Keela Smith, showcased the diverse beauty and indomitable spirit of Black womanhood, adding a visual richness to the experience.

Celebrating Women Committed to Community

At each empowerHER event, we conclude with a special moment that captures the essence of our mission—celebrating and supporting women who dedicate themselves to wellness and healing within their communities. This poignant acknowledgment is a tribute and a tangible support through a monetary gift, all in honor of Cleo Cartel, a revered figure known for her community healing efforts. This year, we were privileged to honor Nicia De’Lovely, a woman whose work resonates deeply with our ethos. Nicia, an Oakland native, has been a beacon of hope and healing, using her talents as a poet and artist to address and mend the traumas endured by those often left at the margins of society. Her powerful performances and advocacy have educated and initiated crucial conversations about healing and empowerment.

The ceremony was as touching as it was transformative. The women in attendance presented Nicia with individual roses, each symbolizing appreciation and recognition of her impactful work. The room filled with solidarity and respect as she was awarded a $500 gift to support her continued efforts in the community. This acknowledgment serves as a cornerstone of our event, reinforcing our commitment to uplift those who uplift others. Nicia’s journey and achievements, highlighted by her award-winning one-woman show “GET UNCOMFORTABLE,” exemplify the profound influence of art and advocacy in healing and change. Through this annual recognition, empowerHER aims to continue fostering a culture of support and appreciation for women like Nicia, who serve their communities and shape paths toward greater healing and resilience.

Looking Forward: A Legacy of Empowerment

As we look to the future, the empowerHER event is poised to grow into an enduring legacy of health and empowerment for Black women. This annual event aims to continually serve as a platform for education, empowerment, and community building, nurturing a legacy that will thrive for generations.

To everyone who joined us—your presence transformed our vision into reality. We invite you to keep engaging, keep sharing, and keep participating. Let’s maintain this momentum, support each other, and keep gathering in the spirit of wellness and unity. Together, we’ll pave the way toward a brighter, healthier future for all Black women.

Thank you for being part of this transformative journey. Here’s to many more years of growth, empowerment, and collective wellness.
