Tea Has the Power to Heal Beyond Herbs

What's Tea?

The dictionary says tea is the dried and prepared leaves of a shrub, Camellia sinensis, brewed into a somewhat bitter, aromatic beverage. It could also be flowers, herbs, or roots steeped into soothing remedies or even a good old British afternoon meal. And of course, let’s not forget —“What’s tea, sis?”

For us, tea is all of that and more. It’s community. It’s healing. It’s a connection to our roots and the women who came before us. And last night’s Tea & Tranquility session reminded us just how powerful that connection can be.

Tea Talk in the African Diaspora

Tea has long held a significant place in the Black diaspora, weaving its way through centuries of culture, tradition, and community. From the refreshing hibiscus teas of Egypt, known for their vibrant red hue and health benefits, to the comforting spiced brews enjoyed in the Caribbean, tea has always been more than just a beverage. It’s a symbol of heritage, a tool for healing, and a cornerstone of social gatherings where stories are shared and bonds are strengthened. Each cup carries the legacy of our ancestors, who used tea not only for nourishment but as a means of preserving their culture across continents.

The diaspora’s relationship with tea is also deeply tied to resourcefulness and resilience. Many traditional remedies, like ginger for digestion or mint for calming the mind, have been passed down through generations, blending African, Caribbean, and Southern traditions. Today, these practices live on, not just in homes but in spaces where Black communities gather to heal and celebrate. Tea, in all its forms, continues to serve as a unifying force—a reminder of where we come from and the power of collective wellness.

In the tradition, we blended soothing and healing herbs and bark, swapping stories about remedies handed down from grandmothers, aunties, and cousins. Some of those memories were tucked away, almost forgotten, until someone mentioned “a little castor oil” or “ginger tea to settle the stomach.” What started as blending teas turned into a beautiful exchange of wisdom, sparking dialogue and sisterhood.

Not only did we learn new things, but we started remembering what we already knew deep down. Healing is layered, and last night, we embraced all those layers—our journeys, our struggles, and our joy in taking In the tradition time for ourselves.

Spaces like this are essential. In a world that constantly pulls us in every direction, these moments allow us to navigate our healing and wellness with intention. They remind us that we’re not in this alone, and sometimes, the simple act of sharing a cup of tea can hold the key to so much more.

And for those who’ve been asking—yes, we’ll do it again! Mark your calendars for March 2025. Until then, keep sipping, keep sharing, and keep healing.

Thank you to all who joined and poured their energy into making this event so special. Until next time, may your cups be full, your herbs be soothing, and your healing journey be bold and beautiful.
